In the realm of fashion, water represents a great deal: any beauty expert can expound at length about the benefits of good hydration, and the expansive world beneath the sea emerged as a major touchstone for many of the Spring 2012 collections. Now, none other than Giorgio Armani will put his signature spin on the element with the Acqua exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, for Paris Photo 2011. For the occasion, works have been suggested and/or lent to Mr. Armani by three of the world’s finest museums: New York’s International Center of Photography, the Elysée Museum of Lausanne, and London’s Tate Modern. The show is on view Thursday through Sunday, which gives you time to book a flight—or swim—to Paris for the spectacular show.

Tuesday night marked the opening of Performa, New York’s vital art performance biennial, which will be no doubt gripping the art community by its jugular for the next three weeks. Many celebrated by indulging a retrospective glimpse into the work of Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen and Dragset, who hosted a large cocktail reception at Skylight Soho featuring re-performances of some of their most banal staged happenings: bearded hipsters in a circle washing dishes, two boys in knitted skirts pensively unraveling one another, a nude man reading on a chaise lounge, ad nauseum.
Across town, downtown’s younger art set—or, those who weren’t working as cater waiters at Skylight—opted instead for the Hole Gallery’s joint opening of Optimism and Cultural Rebellion by Matthew Stone, and Residuum by… Matt Stone. Their names not being their only similarity, both artists presented large, sculptural, densely colorful works. Matthew’s compositions of bodies in twisted embrace, printed on various surfaces, evoked the essence of performance in themselves. Tonight, the pieces come more or less to life, with a Performa-sanctioned live performance from 8 to 9PM. For images of Matthew Stone’s installation, hit the jump.

“LIFE SHOULD BE LARGER THAN LIFE. SIZE IS IMPORTANT TO ESCAPE NORMALIZATION.” – KARL LAGERFELD
Visionaire 61 LARGER THAN LIFE is here! Today, we unveil the cover to the issue, which broke the Guinness World Record for largest magazine issue—TWICE.
This issue of Visionaire initially broke the World Record at 36 x 49.48 inches in size. In an effort to break our own record, we created a Deluxe Edition at 57.48 x 79 inches as well—almost 5 X 7 feet!
In this history-making issue, Visionaire gives iconic artists and image-makers the forum to take their visions to a massive scale. No contemporary figure symbolizes LARGER THAN LIFE more than the global pop phenom Lady Gaga, who graces the front and back covers in two stunning portraits by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. Other contributors to the issue include photographers Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, Mario Sorrenti, and Bruce Weber; artists Doug Aitken, Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Ryan McGinley, Marilyn Minter, Rob Pruitt, Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Sam Taylor-Wood, Josephine Meckseper & Richard Phillips, Marina Abramovic & Martin Schoeller, Guido Mocafico, and Massimo Vitali; fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld, and filmmaker Ridley Scott. Each one takes on LARGER THAN LIFE in their own signature style.
This issue was made possible with the support of Nizan Guanaes, founder of the Brazil-based premium global brand Africa Agency, a subsidiary of Grupo ABC, one of the world’s largest communications groups.

NAN GOLDIN UNVEILS SCOPOPHILIA
Nan Goldin
On Friday night, the inimitable (though oft imitated) Nan Goldin unveiled her new solo show at the Matthew Marks Gallery in New York, Nan Goldin: Scopophilia, a survey of over 400 photographs from the artist’s career. Long infamous for her slideshow exhibition formats, this marks her latest and first in New York since 2007, clocking in at 25 minutes. Commissioned by the Louvre Museum, many of the images contain content sourced from the museum itself, the result of a unique permission granted by the institution. The show runs through December 23.

GSX: GENRE-SPECIFIC XPERIENCE BY FATIMA AL QADIRI
New York based artist and musician Fatima Al Qadiri is known for her visual collaborative work with Khalid al Gharaballi and Lauren Boyle, as well as for her popular genre-evading music out on Tri Angle called Ayshay. On October 21st, Al Qadiri will lift the digital hijab on her next multi-faceted art project, Genre-Specific Xperience, a new album and corresponding music video installation featuring five videos for five new pieces of music. Re-interpreting different sub-genres of dance music, Al Qadiri brough in six artists to create original music videos: Kamau Patton, Tabor Robak, Leilah Weinraub, Sophia Al-Maria, Ryan Trecartin and Rhett LaRue. The videos will be interpreting juke, hip hop, dubstep, electro-tropicalia, and ’90s Gregorian trance.
GSX aims to question the logic of “genre-specific” music through visual video synthesis. Below, see the first video premiered from the series, Vatican Vibes, a Gregorian chant ’90s trance tune envisioned through the lens of the talented Tabor Robak.
Fatima Al Qadiri’s Genre-Specific Xperience, presented by Rhizome, opens at the New Museum in New York City on October 21.

RYAN TRECARTIN’S FIRST MONOGRAPH: ANY EVER
“Could Ryan Trecartin be the first 21st -century artist?” The question is posed by MoCA director Jeffrey Deitch in his foreword to the monograph Ryan Trecartin: Any Ever, available now from Skira Rizzoli. The release of the book comes on the heels of the artist’s successful and wildly heralded New York solo exhibition of the same name at MoMA P.S.1, and on the eve of the exhibition’s opening at Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris on October 18. Edited by Kevin McGarry and released in conjunction with Elizabeth Dee Gallery, the 160-page tome includes an introduction by Trecartin’s main collaborator, Lizzie Fitch, and a one-on-one interview conducted by Cindy Sherman. Featuring three hundred full-color, phantasmagorical stills from his prodigious body of work, the text takes readers back in time through the virtuoso’s oeuvre, without skipping a microsecond of his and his casts’ maniacal postmillennial performances.

VISIONAIRE’S FIVE SENSES: 47 TASTE
From now through October 14, Visionaire presents FIVE SENSES, a limited edition sale of five Visionaire back issues: 33 TOUCH, 42 SCENT, 47 TASTE, 53 SOUND, and 56 SOLAR. Each classic issue is currently on display at the Visionaire Gallery at 11 Mercer Street in New York City. Here is a little bit more about the third sensory installment, TASTE.
Visionaire 47 TASTE is a groundbreaking collaboration with International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) combining the scientific and creative talents of the world’s leading flavorists, contemporary artists, chefs, and photographers. Together, they’ve created works of art that stretch the sensual boundaries of the imagination by simultaneously engaging the viewer’s eyes and tongue.
Visionaire 47 TASTE uses taste-film technology (developed by Biotec Films)—much like the popular breath strips on the market—to deliver completely unprecedented flavors to the mouth. Each taste, such as Orgasm, Guilty, and Mother, is accompanied by an image interpreting the concept. Some tastes are easy to identify, while others are highly conceptual. This may be the first time that flavor has ever been used as a pure art medium, without concern for convention or application and detached from its connection to food.
A few of the flavor strips included in this phenomenal experience include YOUTH by Bruce Weber (cherry licorice), MOTHER by Yoko Ono (condensed milk), FEAST by David Sims (egg and chips), ADRENALINE by Jenny Holzer (jet fuel and metal), and EXOTIC by Nobuyoshi Araki (mango, orange blossom, and pepper).
